Jacob wanted to earn a good sum of money this summer. He really wants to buy a Kindle Fire, and he also needed to earn a large sum of money for a boy scout requirement (and put half towards savings and charitable contributions). So I helped him brainstorm some ideas to help him do it. A few months ago we came up with the idea of a doing a little day camp for boys. This past week was the first week, and he'll do the exact same thing (same activities, but with different boys) during one week in August. Connor got to be a participant (the exchange for all of my help) and LOVED it. He's going to be so bored next week. The moms loved it because he only charged $40 for the whole week, but that is a HUGE amount to Jacob. I'm excited to see him start a savings account. We did the camp Monday-Friday from 9:00-11:30 each morning. Jacob did a great job. He used some of his money to invest in supplies and also paid Zach in advance to help him and for the use of his toys both weeks. I think it's been a good experience for him overall.
We planned a different theme for each day, and Jacob now has a great appreciation for Pinterest. The first day was "Battle Day." The boys made shields, battled Beyblades, Hexbugs, and Gogos, shot balloon targets with Nerf guns, battled on the Wii, and had a marshmallow war with homemade marshmallow shooters. I'm only including the pictures I took that have Connor or Jacob in them.
Tuesday was "The Great Outdoors." Luckily it was really cloudy and not too hot outside. We went on a Nature Scavenger Hunt, where the boys collected cool rocks and leaves. (They also picked out a good stick for the next day.) Then we came back and made fossils from the leaves. We also made crystals out of Borax and water left overnight and did salt paintings. Our "outdoors" was modified to learning about the minerals and stuff outside since it's so hot.
Wednesday was "Hogwarts Day." Jacob was the most excited about this day. On Tuesday night we used the power sander and smoothed down the sticks that the boys had chosen. They became magic wands. They painted them, only it was too bad I didn't check my paint supply earlier because we only had red, green, and tan. Luckily the boys didn't seem to care.
Then we did "potions" and made lava lamps.
The boys had a great time adding the alka seltzer tablets and watching it all bubble up.
We did "charms" and made Ivory soap expand in the microwave.
Then they taught Harry Potter how to fly on his straw broomstick taped to a balloon.
We rounded out the day with a Quidditch match. We also tried to make glow in the dark drinks, but that didn't really work.
Thursday was "Sports Day" and I didn't get very many pictures. We went outside to kick soccer balls, throw a football through hoops, and throw frisbees, but it was so hot that the boys only lasted about 10 minutes. We came in and set up Pringles can bowling and marble races. They also played Wii Sports Resort.
Today was their last day, and it was "Movie Mystery Day." We started out following clues to find the ingredients for snack time. Then we took a group picture before watching Scooby-Doo With Batman and Robin.
They played legos while watching the show.
Then we had homemade slurpees and Scooby Snacks.
Savannah spent the week watching Landon in his bedroom. She seriously had the hardest job of all and she did a GREAT job. She is such a good sister. We only heard him a couple of times the whole week.
They played games, watched movies, read books, and who knows what else. I just know she kept him busy and quiet.
I let them join us today though for movie day and they all had a great time!
